Update on Drifter's eye!

Here are the most recent pics of our boy Drifter!!! Linda took the fly mask off so, I could get a pic of his eye, it looks real good & still has a few little places yet to heal. Drifter is such a sweet boy. He is kind & gentle, & allows us to do what we have to do to help him. We are so very grateful to all of the very generous contributors, who helped Safe Haven pay for his eye surgery! He so much deserves to live his life pain free, & now w/ all the hearts & pocket books that opened up for this wonderful horse, that is a reality! THANK YOU! THANK YOU, ALL YOU WONDERFUL HORSEY PEOPLES!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Bailey & her new "Mom" Tracey

Bailey is one lucky, lucky apaloosa :) She has stolen the heart of one of our volunteers at Safe Haven Horse Rescue! Tracey has been working a bunch w/ Bailey as this baby girl was afraid of EVERY THING! especially plastics of any kind!
Tracey will be riding her, when they mark the trail for our Poker Ride @ Kite's ranch on June 6th, 2009.
Bailey IS a kill pen rescue, from Shirley P. She came to us a few months back, & now has found her FOREVER MOM :)
Tracey is very experienced w/ horses & is a big asset for Safe Haven. She helps Linda & Bonnie w/ the doctorin' of the horses when needed, & can ride like she's glued to that saddle!!!! Her horsey skills are a thing of beauty! :]

Retraction!!!! oops!

In the previous post I said Charlie was a kill pen rescue.......WRONG...... Charlie was headed to the AUCTION.....when the ladies saved him!!!! So our sweet boy was saved all the terror of all that! Sorry for the mix up!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Here's Linda puttin' Candy's face cream on for her scalded skin under her eyes. Candy's eyes were running all the time, & hence the scalding of the skin (made it like leather) Candy also gets eye drops to help w/ the moon blindness & to try & slow down the blindness in the only eye she can see out of. She is a very sweet lady, & is now on the life saving "mush" mixture that Linda has revised over the 13 years of saving these beautiful creatures. After her beauty treatment Candy got a good ole rinse off, as it's been purty darn hot here! As you can see there is a very enterested Charlie looking on! Charlie is another kill pen rescue, Thanks to some very caring ladies, who helped raise the fees to save his life & to transport him to Safe Haven Horse Rescue from So. Cal. They also send "child support" for him every month to help w/ his care :) So a big ole SHOUT OUT to the FOB's for all their love & support! They also got the buzz a goin' & raised the $ for good ole Drifter's eye surgery! Don't know what we'd do with out 'em! Well, it's Saturday & that is always a busy busy day @ SAFE HAVEN, so got to go!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Lindsy & Song

Lindsy is having her first ride alone, on our most wonderful Song :)Song is 30+ in age & is the sweetest li'l gal. Song was born w/ a vertebrae missing in her back, but that does not slow her down, it just makes her back leg position look a little off. She is also a "musher" which means she does not have enough teeth to eat hay, so she is quite happy to have her mush 2x's a day. We have started Candy (the one w/ moon blindness) on the mush too. Linda's mush mixture is a life saver for these horses, it helps them to regain the weight they need, when they come in emaciated. We start them off slow w/ the mixture & after a week or so, we can increase the amount of the pellets we put in there for them. All the horses LOVE their mush!! We have 5 horses solely on mush, & they are all fat & sassy :)
Lindsy is my 3+yr. old G/daughter :] We were in the round pen for Lindsy to have her ride on Song. Wish you could see the smile on that face!!! Lydia (my 15yo G/daughter & Lindsy went & got Song out of her pen, Lyd put the halter on & then let Lindsy lead her to the hitching posts, Lindsy says to Lydia, "Sissy I'm a big girl now huh?" How cute is that?
In this day & age, we at Safe Haven are so blessed to have such a wonderful place to share w/ the younger generation. They learn so much, & are having fun while doin' all the chores it takes to keep up the horses. What more can ya ask for?

Splash & Zipper are permanent residents at Safe Haven.
Time to go feed him!!!

WHOOOO HOOOOO Lunch is READY!!!!!

It was cold , it was windy, & the fire felt warm, &&&&& thennn Penny showed up & showed us city slickers, how to cook over an open fire! She spoiled us rotten that day--that's HOT CHOCOLATE--she has in that there coffee pot :) & homemade beef stew in the dutch oven!!!! Wow this was quite a few volunteer work days ago BUT just the memory makes me warm, fuzzy, & hungry!!!! You are just flat missin' out if you don't come help w/ the horses on the 2nd Saturday of every month! I'm tellin' ya, I hope you're listening!

Splash- saved from the pmu industry/slaughter!

This is Splash! She is a Belgian paint. She came in w/ Zipper, & he's BIGGER!! Wonderful Maggie saved these two from a Canadian pmu farm, when they were only months old. She & some other great people had to buy them by the weight!! or "lot", needless to say, that cost them a ton of $ and than add on the transporting fees!!!!! WOW!
Maggie sent these two gentle giants to Safe Haven as she felt they needed more attention, & her focus was on the 9 some Thorobreds she had also rescued, so that's how we got so lucky :)!!!!
Splash is just green broke, so there's been some "FUN" there! She is getting better every time some one rides her. She looks good in that green halter, BUT she looks really flashy in the hot pink halter & lead rope that Ryan bought for her!!!!
I have to post a pic of Zipper too! sooooooo....
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Linda's most special friend- Sammy

What do you think of this handsome face? Isn't that the cutest guy EVER? Sammy is 1/2 charlois & 1/2 romanola cross! He should weigh around 2000 lbs, but he was born a dwarf ( see his knee).

Linda bottled fed Sammy, they brought him to her shortly after he was born. Sammy will follow Linda anywhere!!!!!! He really thinks he's her dog :) He has been inside the Mt. Shasta Mall so he could be on TV!!!!!!!!!!

Sammy loves to be scratched & to have treats, so come & give him some of both!! Then you'll be a friend of his too!!!!! Sammy share's his home w/ Bessie & Snickers.

Bath day!!!!

Candy & Drifter are getting spruced up! :) It was so hot here in Cottonwood, on Sunday, that the only cool thing to do w/ horses was bathe them!
Tracey & Bonnie, & Linda R. did the honors. Linda has started Candy on her mush mixture,as she could use some more weight & something easy to eat.
That is Drifter in the backround. He looks pretty shiny from here! Dr. Art was out today & took Drifter's stitches out. He said the eye looks real good & the leg is coming along nicely. YEAH :)
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Sunny, asks "Will you be my new Mom or Dad?"

Hi! My name is Sunny & I am a registered 1/2Arabian, & Saddlebred, gelding. I'm new at Safe Haven & am settling in quite nicely :) I was born on Dec. 15th, 1996 & my registered name is Cross Fhyre. My previous owners just called me Horse!, everyone @ Safe Haven thought that I needed a better name SO since I reminded them of Sonny, they call me Sunny. I like it! Since I am an arabian, I am a pinto NOT a paint! I came in w/ a buddy, her name is Dancer & she is older than me, & is an Arabian also. We have adjoining pens, so we are happy about that! :) Well, it's almost feeding time so I have to go!!
Thanks for listening, & I'll post again soon :)
XO's Sunny

How could ya not LOVE that face!!!! He is really really cute. Thank you for pickin' him!!! He's a keeper!

Cashea!! & her new MOM!

Just look @ that proud new Mom!!!& that pretty new halter & lead rope!!! Cashea I think you're gonna be pampered!!! :)
Safe Haven is so happy for Cashea, she has been @ Safe Haven for awhile & she is such a sweet gal. Sometimes it takes awhile for that "just right"person to connect w/ that "just right" horse!
We wish only HAPPY TRAILS for you both!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Joey's new MOM!!!

Joey is a lucky lucky little boy! He is on his way to his new home on a 300 acre ranch in Red Bluff.
Look who is trying to steal the show ! that is our little Lizzie Anne! lookin' purty for the camera!!!
Lizzie Anne's mom Stormy, came to Safe Haven w/ Joey. Their previous owner had to give them up due to illness :( We hope she will get better & we guarantee her that we will take very good care of her horsey's.

Thank you Linda C.

I just wanted to say thank you to Linda C. for sharing the wonderful happenings at Safe Haven. It's amazing what a group of dedicated people can do. The horses that come to Safe Haven are a very blessed to have all of you!
:)Cori

Linda & Candy

Candy is getting her eye medicine from Linda.
Linda was putting drops in both eyes 2x's a day for the first week & now Dr. Art says once a day is enough. When he comes to take Drifter's stitches out, he will also check on Candy's eyes. Candy's feet are much better & she is in the pen next to Drifter. They are both happier campers
being next to each other, & cleaner campers as they both had a bath yesterday thanks to Linda, Bonnie, & Tracey.

Poor old Candy!

Candy, Thank God you found your way to SAFE HAVEN, & Linda R.
She's really in rough shape! Just breaks your heart to see her condition!
This is her BEFORE picture & in a few months, Linda R. will have looking like a new horse!!!!!!!
Her AFTER picture will be amazing!!!!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Linda doctoring Candy

Candy is a 20+ year old mare that came in w/ Drifter. She has eye problems too!! Makes you wonder why! Candy has moon blindness, she is totally blind in her right eye & is partially blind in her left. The vet prescribed some drops for Linda to put in her eyes to stop the progression of this condition & also to stop the pain!

Candy also has "scalding" on her face from her eyes draining down her face all the time. Her poor little face under her eyes was like leather! & peeling! She also came in w/ thrush so bad that her feet were soft & mushy!! Our farrier, Cody cleaned up her feet & put on thrush medicine, wrap her feet & put boots on her!! We had her in the small stall last week but tomorrow she will be able to move to a full size pen! Yippee Skippee :)
Bye for now ,
Linda C.

The baby girl's other pic!

OK! here's the other pic I had on the other page UNTIL I hit a button & whoosh there it went!!!!!!!
This little baby is so cute! She loves to have her butt scratched!!! She will back right up to the fence so you can scratch real good!
Look at her tail!!! It's white on top & black on the bottom!!! Can hardly wait to know her name!!!!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

MsAnnieBlue what name do you choose ????

Look AT that FACE !!!!! Is she telling you what her name should be?

MsAnnieBlue gets to pick cuz she was VERY VERY generous in the Alex Brown Racing Forum, where the FOB's & other contributors, help to raise the $800, needed for Drifter's surgery ! Here are the five favs, of which she gets to choose ; Lizzie; Lizzie Anne; Chloe; Zoe; & Willow!
The suspense of it all!!!!!!!!! Hope you chose soon :) We'll all be waiting for the news!!!!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Drifter is looking pretty good!!!!

Here are two new pictures of DRIFTER for you all to see! He is looking so much better!!!!
His stiches are do to come out on Wed. He is still on meds, antibiotics & stuff for that proud flesh that was on his leg.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE FOB'S & EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO DRIFTER'S SURGERY COSTS !!!!! THEY ARE NOW ALL COVERED !!!!!!! :)
Bye for now.

Stormy and the baby girl!!

Stormy & her baby girl are having some exercise in the arena for the first time since "baby girl" was born!!! They both loved it :), & they had quite the audience! The little palomino paint is Joey & he came to Safe Haven w/ Stormy. Last Saturday Joey was adopted & went home to a 300 acre ranch!!!!!Woo Hoooooooo! The White faced horse is Gentleman Jim, he is almost the oldest guy @ Safe Haven but Patches, ( the one wearing the long crusader fly mask) is the Grandpa of the bunch!! Linda figures that Patches is about 40+ years old! Jimmy is only around 38!!!!!! The two old guys are what we fondly call Mushers, as they do not have enough teeth to eat hay so they live on Linda's mush mixture!
Any way back to that beautiful "baby girl" She needs a name!!!! We have had our volunteers at the ranch list their choice of names, & from that list we are giving the honor of naming her to the one FOB who has donated the largest amount for Drifter's surgery!! SWEET HUH?
The FOB's have just about raised all the money to cover Drifter's vet bill!!!!! & this isn't the first time they have come to the rescue either! They are just wonderful people!!!!!!
Will keep you posted on the new name for our little girl!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

The itty bitties are walking the fuzzy wuzzies!

Tracey's Granddaughters, Lindsey & Dakota are taking, Gambie ( the black one)& Dandy (the brown one) for a little exercise !!!! This is just one of the "chores" the girls do @ the ranch :), they also scoop poop, rake hay, brush horses, & ride when they can!!!!!! They will grow up to be very responsible adults, what more can a person ask for?
We, at Safe Haven help in the saving of horses, BUT they save us & our kids right back!!! Don't you agree? Being involved w/ SAFE HAVEN is such a blessing!
Hope to see you out there!

Drifter's stiches!

Here is Drifter's eye all stitched up. The vets trimmed the stitches & then sprayed the silver stuff on it & put a protector face mask on him so the eye is completely covered so he can't hurt it, even if he rubs it. WOW didn't realize what a long day this has been!!!!!!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Drifter's surgery is all done!

Drifter has had his nighty nite shot & Dr. Art, Linda R., & Jan are helping him down! He has his right front leg planted!! & they are having a heck of a time getting him down!!!!!
