Shady Lady & Big D........going to their new........ ADOPTED HOME!

Shady Lady & her new Mom, Lucy.If Lucy looks familiar, it's because she has been coming out to Safe Haven for riding lessons & to volunteer.

Big D & his new Mom, Joy! They came on Friday to pick up the two horses, as Saturday was suppose to down pour all day! Shady & Big D. have been neighbors for the last couple of weeks so they could get use to being together.

Shady & Big D have brand new blankets waiting for them at their new home, so Safe Haven will keep ours & use them on someone else. Yep! Looky over to the right of this pic & yes, that is Linda R. helping to take off the blanket. Linda has been very good, recuperating from her back surgery, & has been taking it easy (wasting the days, is how she puts it) We all say it's healing time not a waste of the day time!!!

All loaded & ready to go! If you know horses & trailers, you know what Shady Lady is doing!!! These two lucky lucky horses will be right here in Cottonwood! Yea, we'll get to see them then! So! Two pens are open & we will have them filled BEFORE the trailer leaves the ranch!

Ebony, the gelding brought to Safe Haven from the kill pens in Fallon NV, is the first one to get a pen of his own. The two mares he came in with are bullies, so Barb went down to get him out of there. He has gained weight, but the pregnant paint mare kicks at him alot, so a place for peace & quiet & food is all yours Ebony! We put Judd in the other pen, as he had been just roaming the breezeway for awhile, along with Cherokee, & the two of them made for some interesting feeding times! They thought the ZoomZoom (feeding vehicle) was their own personal buffet!!!! Hope to see you out to Safe Haven soon!!!! Bye for now, Linda C.

UPDATE! Tootsie, Missy, Snookers, & Notion (sorry, no pic of Notion)

Hi Linda,

Hadn’t touched base with you in awhile but wanted to let you know that all the “kids” are doing well – We changed the names of Ally & Kelly to Missy (black one) and Snookers (white one).  We have a dog named Kelly near the horses and it was getting confusing using the same name.  Hope you don’t mind.

The black one, now Missy, is just that….little missy nosey face!  She is a character and she is right there with her nose on you whenever you are in their pen.  They are all getting along quite well.  One or the other gets a little testy at feeding time if I don’t separate them out but all in all, they are doing good.

Had the farrier out last week and all got a nice trim….I am going to be sending you a copy of the receipt and a copy of his business card.  We are set up on an 8 week schedule for the time being but if they are still looking good come the next appt, will probably go out 10 weeks over the winter months.   I have been trying to get a good picture of the 4 of them together but with the wet weather, the 3 girls have taken to rolling in the mud and almost look like they have dreadlocks in their manes.  Get them brushed out every chance we get but they turn around and are rolling again!  Not sure if I will get a decent picture until Spring!.  In any event, I wanted to wish you a wonderful Holiday Season and a very Merry Christmas.

Take care Linda and I thank you again for our furry little blessings!

Tami

The 'fake' hot wire pasture!

Flower, Andy, Lovey, & Cessie are out in the green pasture, that has hot wire all the way around it But it is not hooked up to any hot box!!!! All in all most of the horses don't figure that out!!!!! They Love this field.

They just Love to run up this little hill, & 'visit' the horses in the neighboring pens & then take off down the hill again!

Here's Bonnie & Holly going to see if we can expand this favorite area. Me & Mike are here too! I'm the one behind the camera!!!

This is Lovey running up the hill after the other 3, & now I am up close & personal to the fence at Splash's pen!!!!!

Holly did you know that your two horses both have a white sock??? Lovey one, & Cessie two!

Here's Cessie, the great great Grand Daughter to the one & only Secretariat, she is checking out the rubber pipe thingys that the four of us have been pulling out of the ground! Cessie looks so good now! She & Lovey both came to Safe Haven very emaciated! Lovey about 4 years ago & Cessie last February! Well, we scoped out the new boundaries, cleaned up all the debris & left the horses to have their fun!
Bye for now,
Linda C.
PS. Andy, is the Grandson to Secretariat also!

Update on the 3 from the Kill pens in Fallon NV.

Gypsy was brought to the arena, for a run & a roll before some grooming!  She is enjoying a nice run around the arena! Looking Good! She is really a sweet mare.

This is her barrel & butt shot on Dec 11, 2010! NICE! The next two pics are her BEFORE pics! Look at the difference!

Yep! This is Gypsy on Nov. 1, 2010!

Pic of her butt, on 11/1/2010

Nice, really nice, to see her getting up to weight & feeling frisky!

Yes! This IS the pregnant mare!Makes ya wanna shout Woo Hoo! She's beautiful!

This is her body shot on 12/1/2010.......&............

Her body shot on 11/1/2010! Can you see the improvement????

The other side of her, on 12/11/2010

Last but not least is Ebony, the gelding. He is a very sweet boy!

This is his body on 12/11/2010, we were all concerned about his condition as he doesn't look as good as the 2 mares but after viewing his 'before' pic, he is doing well too!!!! Just going to take a little longer w/ him.

HUGE difference!!!!Guess we forgot just how much of a bad shape he arrived in!

Big improvement! Excuse the muddy coat, as I caught these pics when they were on the way to be groomed! Safe Haven Horse Rescue sends a big THANK YOU to all the wonderful people who have stretched their all ready tight pocket books & sent some much needed $ to help these 3 horse get back to a normal life! It DOES take a VILLAGE, & we are very gratefull to YOU ALL!      Bye for now, Linda C.

December 2010's Volunteer Work Day = AWESOME!!!!!!! THANK YOU TO ALL!

Wow! Where do I begin??? The support Safe Haven Horse Rescue received from the public that came out to help with the horses was just Amazing! Safe Haven would like to first say to Everyone who came out, a Very Heartfelt Thank YOU! Y'all worked So Hard, & let me tell you, it wasn't easy scooping the poop this time, as we have had so much rain, it is a muddy mucky mess! Look at these girl's boots! & that's a pretty small wheelbarrow, but it is HEAVY!!! Took 2 to pull it!

Judd was a mucky muddy mess too, so he got a much welcomed brushing!

Gambi & Buttercup are going to get brushed too!!! Safe Haven loves to have the minis for the kids that come out! They are less intimidating for them.

Look at Buttercup, she is so nosy!!!! Looks to me as if she is saying Hey! Whatcha doing??? Got Cookies??? These girls & their Mom have become Sponsors!!! Yeah!!!!!! & Thank You!

Another 'cart' load of wet hay out of the breezeway!!!! Good Job! & that may be hay, but it is heavy too!

Cherokee & Grady are getting brushed here! The black & white paint is Pepper, she is in her pen, But she is not so happy about having other horses close to her pen! She was just awful to poor ole Judd! We had to prop a lunge whip against the hitching post & 'threaten' to use it to get her stop charging the fence!!!! LOL!

Now, it's Drifter's turn for brushing! She really didn't see this side of Drifter till she had him tied up, he is so mud caked!!!!That poor girl's arm must have been mighty sore this am!!!!! She also did Saber!

This Lady & her Grandson,? & her Daughter,? are from the Shasta Cascade Riders, & I must say, they worked very very hard! They were cleaning out shelters at 9am! & did all the waters & cleaned the breezeways & pretty much made it possible for a bunch of  the horses to get groomed! Thank You Thank You Thank You! They have taken Minime & Dandy out to brush & for a run in the arena!

Seems to me they got an awful lot of 'exercise' themselves exercising those two!!!!!!

Yep! They pretty much chased the minis around the arena!!!!! So! Who exercised who??????

Looks to me, like the minis are DONE! All wore out ya might say! Actually, I think they took them out to clean them up from all the mud, But little sweet, Minime was being her bratty little, I'm too cute to listen to you & no I won't stand still,  Inspired the run in the arena! The Gals, know horses, & knew they had to win that little battle of the mind!!! Good job too! Sorry you had to work More!!!!!! Thank You so very much to all that came out yesterday!           You all ROCK!          Well, I'm out of room, so.......Bye for now, Linda C.

Update on Louie!

Louie is FINE, he just took a Digger in his First snowfall! I must admit that this 'new blogger format directs' me @ the moment, so please, bear w/ me! The E-mail that was sent is at the bottom of this blog, so if you scroll down you get the update that came w/ these pics! I do apologize for Any inconvenience!

There he is! Up and Running!

Nice trot, there Louie! Meet Lucy, his new stall mate!

Louie is such a HAM! Looking straight at the camera!!!!!

I like this shot, like the next one, even more!

Hi Linda and everyone at Safe Haven. It’s time for another Louie update.  This year we had very early snow, and a lot of it.  We don’t think that Louie had ever seen snow before.  He was walking in it as if it was the weirdest thing ever and I don’t think he realized that it was not only weird, but slippery too, because he totally wiped out while I was leading him!  He didn’t get hurt but it looked so funny that we laughed so hard, but he took it all in good humor. And, after a couple of days he learned to love snow – I have attached some pictures of him playing in the snow with his new friend Lucy – an older paint mare that we adopted this fall.  They have adjoining stalls and they get along great except both are jealous of each other for Emma’s attention J.  In the pictures I think you will also see that Louie really has put on some groceries right in the nick of time before winter.  He has a nice warm blanket and a covered stall for the nights too, so I don’t think he’ll lose the weight again even if it turns out to be a hard winter up here.
I hope you will enjoy the pictures of Louie playing in the snow!
Cheers, Anna and Emma

If you go into the archives of Safe Haven blogs, you will find the first update on Louie on Aug, 18, 2010. Just to see that awesome picture of Emma & Louie in the barn at the fair!

Hope to see you this Saturday, at Safe Haven Horse Rescue for Volunteer Work Day!!!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Judd, a Medicine Hat Paint

There was a small break from the rain on Saturday, so horses were let out to run & roll!!!! Here comes The Judd!!!! He certainly is feeling frisky!!!!! Way back to the other end of the arena Rebel & Cherokee are being frisky too!

Put the brakes on there, Big Guy!!! Can ya tell he has had a blanket on???? Compare his neck to his body!!!!! Judd is a Medicine Hat Paint, he has the color over his ears, the 'shield' of color on his chest, & color over his back. American Indians thought these horses had 'Special Powers' so hence the name Medicine Hat. Well! Thought I'd make sure I had the story right on the Indians and the Medicine Hats, & this is what I found. First, a Quote; (author unknown) Protected are those who are loved by a Medicine Hat for no harm will come to them. Cool huh? I also found that the famous children's book author Marguerite Henry, wrote about them in a book called "San Domingo: The Medicine Hat Stallion" and that Breyer, made a model of San Domingo too. Also, since no harm would come to their riders usually only Chiefs or Great Warriors would own them. OK back to our Judd!
Judd is a musher out at Safe Haven Horse Rescue, and that means he does not have enough teeth left in his old age to chew up hay, so he lives exclusively on the mush mixture that Linda Richards has refined over the 15 + years of taking care of horses. He Loves his mush!  Judd also needs some medical attention to his left eye, unfortunately, it will have to be removed, there is a tumor growing and pushing his eyeball in! We hope to raise the funds needed this winter, so he can have the surgery BEFORE the FLYS come back!
Judd is a real sweetie, and is very loved by the little ones, this is my Granddaughter, Lindsy, dressed up as a fairy, for the costume class at the last Play Day, Safe Haven had in Oct. Aren't they just adorable!!!! Judd even had his own set of wings! Big smile on that face! Kids and Horses!!! a Safe Haven Specialty! Darren looks rather happy himself in this pic! He was the stellar 'Grill Man' for the Play Day! You can also see Excessorized in the back ground too. She and Andy were the flag carriers to get the Play Day started!!!  They are both descendants of Secretariat. Well, hope to see you out to Safe Haven Horse Rescue soon!!! Next Saturday is Volunteer Work Day!!!!!!! We'll make ya LUNCH, in exchange for your helping out ") 3950 W. Anderson Dr. Cottonwood, Ca. 96022....530-347-4941
