Feeding in the Lightning Thunder & HAIL!

February 24th, 2011 was quite the adventure for Linda R. Barb & Linda C.! The hail, lightning & thunder started when we were just a little over half done feeding!!! The horses were not happy with the weather either! I thought Cherokee was gonna get in the Zoom Zoom for cover!!!! Thankfully the hardest hail didn't hit until we were all back in the barn!

When there was a small break, I walked over to the arena to take a picture of the hail. You can see there is a lot of hail as my foot prints are leaving quite the impression!

Looks like snow doesn't it?

I was amazed at all the water run off! It came & went so fast! Happy to report that feeding tonight was a breeze! Everyone (horses) were all just fine! & no weather to impede the process!!!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Volunteer Work Day Feb. 12, 2011 = BIGGEST ONE EVER! Part 3 Horses!

Penny is giving Splash some treats on her way thru the arena. This pic doesn't show but there are some 'whirlwinds' in Splashes beautiful mane, so Penny actually took her out of the arena to fix her up! Penny washed & a Work Day Volunteer did a most beautiful job of ................

BRAIDING her mane!!!!!! Isn't that just gorgeous! AWESOME AWESOME JOB! & Penny did her.........

TAIL! Way to go Ladies! Thank you all so much!

Woody was brought out for some grooming too! He is a gelding that is just so cute, & Up for Adoption! Contact Safe Haven for all the info on Woody, @ 530-347-4941. The little girl brushing Buttercup's tail,...... is Buttercup's new SPONSOR!!!! Yeah! Sponsorship of the horses at Safe Haven, is a win win situation for both Safe Haven & the people who do the sponsorship! Sponsorship is used to cover the food, farrier, & vaccination costs. Once you are a Sponsor, you get to take care of the animal as if it was your own, & it's a perfect way to find out, just how serious your child is about having a horse of their own! Over the years Safe Haven has saved many a parent lot's of money & frustration!

Deena, was out in the little grassy area for awhile on Saturday, but when she 'told' us she was done, & was ready to go back to her pen, her Sponsors Debbie & her Mom, Dee (not in the picture) gladly helped her out! Deena is such a sweet old girl!

Linda R. is moving Tosha, so her pen could be cleaned. Tosha is a recent one-eyed mare & has adjusted to that quite well, but she likes to 'help' & is too often in the way!!!! Tosha is also Up for Adoption!

Cindi has saddled up Gypsy for a little bit of a work out! If you follow Safe Haven's blog you know that Gypsy is one of three, that came in from the 'kill pens'! She's an  Arabian & is coming along nicely.

Bonnie had Gypsy out first for some grooming as needless to say, she needed some De-Mudding!!!!!! There were many more horses that were groomed on this day also. Between the scooping, the lunching, & the grooming, there was just way more activity than we have captured in pictures! So, if by chance we have missed YOU in all the stuff you helped with, we certainly Do Apologize! We also hope to have the Same Problem next month!!!! The Support that was so freely given to the horses was just Heart-Warming, Good for the Soul, Renewing your Faith in Humanity kind of  a day, & We THANK YOU ALL!

Volunteer Work Day Feb. 12, 2011 = BIGGEST ONE EVER! Part 2 LUNCH!

Marc Beylick, & his 'stellar' BBQ'er on wheels provided the lunch for everyone! He launched his new business, shortly after this & it is called Hog Heaven BBQ & Catering! Big Thanks to Marc for the wonderful pulled pork sandwiches, beans, coleslaw, & crispy chili cheese squares! EVERY THING was delicious!

Barb, is the reason Marc was there to help with lunch! Good Going Barb!!! Barb helped to serve the food & here is a potato salad from Tara. That was an awesome potato salad too! Thank You!

WOW! The pork roast was so juicy & tender, & smoked to perfection!

There are those crispy cheesy with green chilies squares, that were just the best little things ever!

Now, on this sandwich there were different types of BBQ SAUCE to put on the sandwich! Let me tell you! The Raspberry Chipoltle one was to die for!!!! I went back for more of that just right bit of hot & flavor after one bite! Marc will be having his sauces available for purchase soon & I have my 'order' in all ready!!

The table area was just about 'standing room' only!

Waiting in line.

There were also Safe Haven T-Shirts & Hats out for sale too! Now, save room for.............

CAKE! Cindi made sure that there was a little sweet treat for everybody too! Good job Cindi! Thank you! & the cake says it all! It says Thank You for All You Do! A huge Thank You to all the Wonderful People Who Worked So Hard on Volunteer Work Day! YOU ALL ROCK! & Safe Haven is Very Grateful to You All! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

Volunteer Work Day Feb. 12, 2011 = BIGGEST ONE EVER! Part 1A

Big Thank You to Michael Killingbeck of L & M Equine Photography for sharing some of the pics he took on Sat! Here's a better pic of the 'Troops' cleaning Splash's pen!

Besides all of the 'scooping' going on, Larry owner of Earl's Auto Electric in Redding, erected the last 2 shelters Safe Haven had to put up! Way to go Larry! Thank You!

Cindi is giving a 'Tour'! Safe Haven likes to take newcomers around to see all the horses & hear their stories. That way it is so much more personable, than just giving them a bucket of treats & saying "here ya go! have fun"

Safe Haven's lesson horse, Leo, decided to give a 'tour' of his own! He is such an awesome ole guy!

WOW! This group is really getting after that pen! Great job Christy! Thanks for bringing all that help!

After the shelters went up, Tracey & Cathy cut & transported & placed mats for them. Not an easy job I must say!

Cindi & Wade's son Wado looks like he is on a Mission! Good Job Wado!

Another Tour! I know you can't see her but Linda Richards was giving this one! Sessie, the Great Great Grand Daughter to Secretariat, is certainly enjoying the attention! Rebel is right up for his fair share too!

Yep! This just says it all!!!!  This sign hangs in the barn, & is so true on just about any day!!! Thanks to Barb for finding it & hanging it up! Now stay tuned for Lunch! Your mouth is gonna be watering!!!!

Volunteer Work Day Feb. 12, 2011 = BIGGEST ONE EVER! Part 1

Safe Haven Horse Rescue would like to THANK all the Work Day Volunteers that came out on Sat. Feb. 12th, 2011 to make this THE Most Successful Work Day EVER! They weren't shy or finicky on the chores they tackled, so the worst of the worst in need of help pens were scooped, & shoveled into awesome conditions! This fearless 'troop' took on Splashes pen! THANK YOU!

Here's A Trooper of a Dad taking the heavy, mucky, mud & poop, to the manure pile! Way to GO!

Splash is very grateful for all the help in her pen & enjoyed a romp in the arena, while her pen was under maintenance! She stopped long enough to say Hi to Cindi & there's Mike K. w/ his camera!

Wow! not only did this group of Awesome Volunteers come out to help, they went Shopping on Cafe Press to help support the horses at Safe Haven & bought T-Shirts!!!! You 'Guys' ROCK!

Yes, the girls were supporting Safe Haven T-shirts from our store at cafepress.com also, & you can see that there are many different styles to chose from! Lot's of colors too! Not only can you buy T-shirts, there are hats, hoodies, sweatshirts, water bottles, coffee mugs, totes, & aprons available! AWESOME! Don't you think the shirts just look even better when there is a manure fork in your hand? It's the essential accessory! THANK YOU LADIES!

What is it about a Youngster & a Wheel Barrow that is just so darn Cute!

This Dad is making sure to capture the day & took pics of his children in the manure pile! Forever proof of how Stellar his kids are!

It's a long way to tip a wheel barrow! & this young gentlemen made numerous trips w/ his!

Two more Awesome Scoopers! on their way back to fill up the wheel barrow again! Thank YOU!

Dandy was out for a walk w/ a Volunteer. Safe Haven's horses got a huge amount of attention on Volunteer Work Day also, but that will be in another blog, as the room for pics is limited, so there will be part 2 & 3! Stay tuned!

Marc from Hogs Heaven BBQ & Catering provided the lunch for everyone on Sat! He made pulled pork sandwiches w/ all the fixin's! I'll share more on lunch in part 2!  As the saying goes It Takes a Village, & Safe Haven Horse Rescue certainly has an AWESOME VILLAGE! THANK YOU ALL!

Lance has been Adopted & his new Mom, Beverly, sent pics!

Thank you so much for Lance.  While I have three other horses; Lance fills the void left by the passing of my 35 year old Millie last year. I was right about him when I first saw him - as I spent much time with him in his new stable/paddock today, I learned that he stands quietly for lengths of time with my arm around his neck and acts like he's really listening to everything I say - just like my Millie did.

Lance is grazing w/ Rancher!

Lance wasn't too keen on meeting the other horses, yells and stomps/paws the ground when they get close.

He acts rather possessive over his stall and paddock. Dini (my 27 year old Arab) stood at the gate nearly all day trying to get Lance to come over and was getting impatient hanging over Lance's stable door. Lance told him in no uncertain terms to "stay away" and tried to bite Dini at feed time.  We are familiar with this behavior; my old mare used to show the same dominance and kept the other horses away from her stall.

Beverly

Linda Richards sent out this e-mail after Lance was adopted;
Thought I would forward this on to you all to let you know what a great home Lance went to.
She is planning on bringing him to our playdays.
She is the lady that fell in love with him when she saw his picture that was posted on our facebook.
He will be very loved and cared for. I will send her pictures on when I get them.
Thanks

Gypsy, the kill pen rescued mare.

Safe Haven Volunteer, Cindi is working with Gypsy in the round pen before she rides her. Cindi reports, that she did very well in the round pen & it was obvious that she has had a lot of training in one!

YES! Cindi riding Gypsy went very well! She stayed nice & calm & did what ever Cindi asked her to do! Bonnie, rode her also last weekend, & she was very good for her too.

Cindi also reported that Gypsy tied to the hitching post without any pulling back & displayed no bad manners while she was being groomed & was very easy to saddle!

Gypsy has a nice smooth trot on her too! This mare is going to make some lucky person a very nice all around horse! She is a very pretty little mare! The quiet type Arabian. So many people think that all Arabians are of the hot blooded type, BUT they are not!

Yes, this is Gypsy & Autumn on their very first day at Safe Haven Horse Rescue back on Nov.1, 2010! They came to Safe Haven hungry, scared, & in need of lot's of good ole TLC! Safe Haven has found out so far on the three of them, Ebony, the little black gelding is older, & in need of his teeth floated, which was done last month. Autumn is in need of much handling before her baby comes (some time around March) as she is somewhat nervous with people, & doesn't like her milk bag touched! So Cindi is out to Safe Haven as I type, grooming Autumn & plans to spend much more time with her every day!  Gypsy is a love, begs for her food with the heart catching front leg curled up in the air, going please please please! Really cute! Saturdays are always a good day to come out to Safe Haven Horse Rescue, & we Hope to see You SOON!
Bye for now,
Linda C.
PS. Thanks for the photos Barb!
