Starving HORSE found in Forest & RESCUED!!!

This poor horse was found by some deer hunters in the Bunch Grass Wilderness,
about 14 miles from the Hat Creek Resort. The hunters told the owners of the resort,
about the horse, they ,then went & found the horse, took him home to their place. She
called animal control and they said there was nothing they could do, she was told she would have to keep the horse thirty days.

They put an ad on Craig's list, saying that
they had found a horse. Safe Haven's Bonnie, contacted the owner of the resort, & she
told Linda R. about the horse. Guess What!!!!!!!!!! He, "Hank" was brought to Safe Haven
today!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOHOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Hank" has a heart shaped brand located on his shoulder.

We would like to know if anyone knows his history, we would be so grateful to hear from you. You can email us at safehavenhorse@gmail.com or contact us at 530-347-4941. We'll keep you posted!!!!!!!!

English Tack

Hi ya all,

Sorry it's been so long in between blogging :-)

We have been very busy w/ the horses, the fencing, the feeding,

the Vets! & life in general !!!!!

Sunday, July 13th, we took some of the tack, donated to us from

Pet Smart to the CSHA schooling show Belt Buckle series to see

if we could raise some money for Safe Haven Horse Rescue. We

did sell a few pieces, & learned that everyone was very focused on

horses & classes so that was probably not the right timing for that.

We have all the tack out at Safe Haven, so for the people who were

interested in buying some & didn't have the time, we will be more

than happy to show you the stuff if you come out to the ranch !!!!!!

Hope to see you soon !

Bucky & Mystery

Safe Haven took in two more horses last week as they were headed to

the auction, so they were playing russian roulette w/ their lives!!!!! Not

that they had a say in the matter!!!! Buck is a 24+ Morgan , QH cross & is

a strawberry roan. Our farrier, Cody has changed his name to Roany, he

likes the name, & since we all ready have a Buck, we like it too. Roany is sweet

& it looks like he as a good chance to be one of our lesson horses! will keep

you posted on that.

Mystery is a 20 ish bay mare & was named Mystery as the owners didn't know

what breed she is !!!! She is very long in the back & has some fluffies on her legs.

She is a lesson horse & did very well in lessons on Sat for 10yo Sam, her sponsor.

Sam was so cute, she keeps calling her Miracle, I would say you mean Mystery,

& Sam would say " that's right" & in the very next sentence about Mystery, she'd call

her Miracle!!!!! So maybe there's another name change for her too!!!!! Will let you know

about that too. Saturday is always a fun filled day @ SAFE HAVEN HORSE RESCUE

Hope to see you there!!!!!!

Bye for now,

Linda C.

Onyx

Onyx is a 2 year old Arabian colt, that was saved by Shirley P. from out of the
kill pen.

Shirley you ROCK !!!
Poor little Onyx has not had a very easy life
so far -- his lower jaw had been broken a one time,
so his bottom doesn'tquite meet the top.

But he can still eat, & his tongue was almost cut in half !

At such a young age you'd think he'd be done w/ the human race but he is
just as sweet & gentle as can be! Onyx's sponsor Dave M. has been taking very
good care of him, giving him baths, spending quality time with him , &
exercising him in the round pen. He is Dave's little buddy.

We'll post a picture soon!!!

Bye for now ,

Safe Haven's Spring Playday

Safe Haven Horse Rescue's first Spring Playday fundraiser
was a wonderful success !!!!!!

We'd like to thank all the
people who came out to support the horses.

THANK YOU!

Linda R. received quite a few e-mails saying what a fun day
it was & they are so looking forward to the next Playday in Oct.

With out the support of the public, Safe Haven wouldn't be able
to help as many horses as we do, & we give heart felt THANKS
to the public, the Sponsors, raffle item donors, & all the hard
working volunteers who gave big bunches of their time to
make the Playday a success !!!!!!

Bye for now,

Charley, Barbi and Beauty

Barbi is doing great, she has put on some good weight and just loves her mush. She does eat hay but leaves a lot stems, she can only eat the soft hay flakes. So she is doing very well with our mush and she just loves it. When we let her out to graze she is a happy girl, when it is time for her to go back to her pen, all you have to do is call her and open the gate and she runs back to her pen, all by herself. She is such a sweetheart, she has really come to life since being here. There is sparkle in her eyes. And she just shines in the sun. We have had our chiropractor work on her and it has really helped her with her back end.

Charley is doing well, He has some lameness problems that we are working on. They are not bad, but we are working on getting him better. He is just a very, very sweet boy. What ever you want of him he says OK. He is great with the little children, he will do anything for them. He is very sweet and gentle.

We had to put Charley on grass hay only, he has gotten a little to fluffy. We found out that he is a really easy keeper. But he loves his grass hay, he also gets senioir grain with his joint supplement.

Beauty is a very happy girl. She is foot lose and fancy free with all the other horse's. They all have many acres to run on. And a nice warm barn to sleep in at night. The snow is about gone now. All the horse's loved rolling in the snow and also eating it. She has really come a long way. She has gotten used to being brushed and being loved on. She loves the attention. She now also has 2 more horse's to play with. Robin adopted Sierra and Moca our 2 babies. Sierra is 9 months old and Moca is 4 months old. They are all doing great...

Everyone is doing great. They are all healthy and happy and getting lots and lots of love and great care...

This needs to be known...

Comment: Herds of horse manure: How USA Today misled America about horse slaughter
April 3, 2008
by Julie Caramante

Blame for current horse welfare problems in the United Stated is placed squarely on the closure of US horse slaughterhouses in a March 23 article appearing in USA Today.

Presented as a news article, the story is based on unsubstantiated statements disseminated by organizations that profit from irresponsible breeding and overbreeding practices. Included among the organizations is the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) whose stated goal is to substantially increase its already large 150,000 annual registrations. Revenues of the AQHA are based on registration fees.

The article opens with the assertion that the "forced closure of the last horse-killing facilities in the USA, done at the urging of animal rights activists, has caused a herd of unwanted horses in animal shelters nationwide, according to breeders, ranchers and horse rescuers."

In point of fact, the plants were closed by upholding already existing state law in Texas and by legislative enactment of state law in Illinois, not by "animal rights activists."

The reporter further claims that "herds of unwanted horses" have resulted despite the fact that Jerry Finch, founder of the largest equine protection organization in the US Habitat for Horses, and Deputy Director Chris Heyde of the Animal Welfare Institute, each spoke with the reporter and provided factual information to the contrary.

Mr. Finch fully explained and documented that there has in fact been no increase in neglect since the closure of the US slaughter plants

Perhaps the best illustration of the USA Today article's rampant inaccuracy and sloppy reporting is that I am quoted twice and at length, but never once spoke to the reporter or anyone at USA Today. While I agree that, "Horses are pets, not an entrée" and "There is a global market for dog meat, (but) we wouldn't even dream of selling our pets for that," I did not say it, someone else did.

What I did do was send USA Today a report via email on abandoned horses called "Deleting the Fiction, Part 2", documenting the lack of truth in claims of increased cases of neglect. Yet the reporter chose not to use factual information, opting instead to peddle the sensational and alarmist views of pro-slaughter advocates.

Despite sloppy journalism and obvious bias, the article was received by a national audience that assumes USA Today is a credible news outlet.

Fortunately, during the same week CBS Evening News with Katie Couric presented a factual, well balanced story on recent horse welfare issues called "Heartbreak in Horse Country," showing that skyrocketing hay prices have created difficulties for many horse owners.

Not once was a need for slaughter mentioned, much less promoted in the CBS News story!
It is frustrating and frankly unforgivable to hear pro-slaughter groups like the AQHA complain and viciously oppose the closure of the horse slaughterhouses while doing absolutely nothing for the welfare of horses. Not once does the AQHA mention hay hotlines or offer assistance to horse owners affected by foreclosures and related issues stemming from the faltering US economy.

The mistake many of us made up until recent years was believing that the AQHA is or ever was concerned about equine welfare. Their own figures show they have spent less than an annual average of $130,000 since the early 1960s on horse welfare. Such a feeble gesture does not deserve to be called an effort.

One final note: In Canada, where several horse killing plants operate, problems with horse neglect are equal to if not more pronounced than those in the US. A recent press release from the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry reports the issue. Obviously, the concept that horse slaughter is 'good' for horses and provides the 'answer' to promoting horse welfare is not actually the case.

Julie Caramante is an equine cruelty investigator for the largest equine protection organization in the US and a resident of Texas. She has worked to end horse slaughter in the US since 2003. She has owned horses since the age of 3 and been involved with horse issues her enitre adult life. She operates the seminal reference website for horse slaughter at www.kaufmanzoning.net/horsemeat.
Horse slaughter in the news
GOING BAREFOOT
Could your horse go without shoes?
The idea of 'going barefoot' appeals to many people for various reasons. But many horse owners are uncertain about what it entails and whether it would suit their horses.

Safe Haven Horse Rescue's busy Springtime

Hi Everyone!

I thought I'd list our schedule for the next couple of months, we're gonna be busy!!!!!

On the 5th of April
,
we will be at the Anderson Fairgrounds for the "Love Your Pet Expo."
I think the hours are from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

We were going to do a Cowpie Bingo w/ Sammy the dwarf steer (who is absolutely adorable), but Linda R. is having surgery on her arm on the 2nd,
& since she is the one to handle Sammy, we thought we'd
better take horses instead so the rest of us could handle them.

SO we're taking the two biggest horses we have!!!, Zipper a Thoroughbred &
Percheron cross, & Splash a Belgian Paint!!!
They are gentle giants & it will be fun to show them to the public.

Both of these horse are a product of the PMU industry,
& will give an opportunity to educate the public on that awfull situation
that some horses must indure. Thank Goodness there are way fewer farms doing that now.

OK back to the schedule!!!!
Safe Haven will be having it's 1st Springtime PLAYDAY on April 13th
at the Bobby Jones Arena here in Cottonwood.

I would like to invite those of you w/ horses to come & participate, & those of you who don't have horses to come watch the fun also as you can help support SAFE HAVEN
by having lunch at our snack bar & also buying raffle tickets for the drawings we have during the day.

On Sat. April 26th Hawes Farm & Ranch in Anderson will be having a Customer Appreciation Day, they will have a cowpie bingo, & are going to donate most of the proceeds to Safe Haven......WHOO- HOO!!!!!!!

On April 27th, CSHA ( California State Horsemen Association, Inc) will
have their "Open Schooling Show"at Bobby Jones arena &
they have invited us to come & put up a booth, so we will be there w/
the tack that PET Smart donated to Safe Haven.

Oh I almost forgot! the 12th will be Volunteer Work Day at SAFE HAVEN!!!
We'll make ya lunch if you come out to help :-) Hope to see you all at everything that's on the schedule!!!! in April!!!!!! ( will list more later as this is just for April)

Bye for now,
Linda C.

Safe Haven Horse Rescue Up Date

We had a great day at the Animal Adoption Day at Anderson River Park.

Thank You to all the girls from the New Tech High School that invited Safe Haven Horse Rescue.

We brought 2 horse's that everyone could love and pet on. They were Zipper the big TB/Percheron gelding that is 18 hands tall and 2000 pounds. A very big sweetheart. And Gambie one of our mini's.

Gambie and Zipper are both really pretty black horse's. So we broght our biggest horse and our smallest horse.

We asked everyone to come out to Safe Haven Horse Rescue and visit all the horse's that are in between Zipper and Gabie's size's.

We all had a great time and both horse's were just great. Hope to see some new people come out to Safe Haven.

We also have an event coming up on April 5th at the Love Your Pet Expo. We are hoping to bring both of our draft horse's.

Hope to see you all there.

Safe Haven is bulging at the seams!!!!!!!

WOW!!!! I did a head count OR should I say; I did a tail count yesterday of all the horses at Safe Haven Horse Rescue. We are back up to 40 horses, that does include the 2 mini's we have. I thought I'd break it down a little further, Safe Haven has; 2 Mini's, 2 Drafts, 2 Quarter Ponies, & 34 Horses!!!!!!!!! That is alot of HAY!!! We received in two horses on Sat. they are Ali an 11 year old Arabian mare, & Bandit a 27 year old Gruella Quarter Horse, who is emaciated, he is a SPECIAL NEEDS HORSE, & was put on the mush Sat. We now have 10 buckets of mush to feed 2x's a day, so that makes 20 big buckets of mush, 4 bales of Alfalfa, 1 bale of Grass, & for the PM feeding we have 17 small buckets w/ grain for the horses who need joint supplement. I was going to add up all the extras we feed, but I will save that info for another day.
Just so my title fits this piece, I'll say that Safe Haven is over flowing w/ horses at this time, & Linda R. is getting more phone calls & more e-mails every day from people w/ horses to place w/ us, she has some on a waiting list to come in as other horses get ADOPTED so if you can adopt or foster a horse - come on out, & we'll be glad to match you w/ a beautiful equine!!!
Gotta Go...Bye for now

New Horse's at Safe Haven Horse Rescue

Barbi
Blaze Charley

We have gotten in a few new horse's.

The newest arrival is Sonny. He is a really nice red dun QH gelding.

The one before him is Leroy he is the paint that ain't. He is a really nice reg. APHA gelding with no paint color. He is a really pretty Sorrel. He is a very sweet boy.

He does have some ringbone in one of his front feet. But will be fine with our joint supplement.
We also have a nice Arabian gelding that we named Lucky Blaze. Because he is lucky to be alive.

He was rescued out of a kill pen with 8 other horse's that were going to slaughter from a auction in Nevada.

He came into Safe Haven Horse Rescue very underweight and with a really bad upper respiratory infection. He has been on medicine since he has been with us. Our vet has seen him and says he is on the road to recovery.
He has put some weight on, but not much, as he has been fighting his cold.

He is very sweet, he was very scared when he came in. Just not sure of what was going on.

Blaze has really settled in now and trusts us so much more now.

He is even talking a lot more now when he See's us and when it's feeding time.

We also got Barbi and Charley in from southern Ca.

Barbi is a really nice paint mare. She is coming along very nicely.

Charley is a gaited paint gelding. We are not sure what breed he is. But he is a very smooth ride.

Wind, wind, wind!!!!!!

Linda R. & Linda C. fed the horses at Safe Haven Horse Rescue this AM. it was pretty darn windy out there. We did get some rain, as we had to turn feeders over to get the water out of 'em. There must have been a good 2" in some of them! The power was out @ Safe Haven this morning so the well was out too. We bucketed water from a few of the water barrels so we could wet the Mush for our "special needs" horses who live on this mixture. Linda R has refined the mush mixture over the years & has found a formula that works quite well & will put weight on any Equine no matter what the age! Just ask Patches, he is now 38 & is a big ole butterball!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Safe Haven Horse Rescue is Here for Our Equine Friends

We are a group of people who care about horses and their quality of life. As a non-profit organization (501C-3 Corporation), we improve the lives of horses by providing a safe environment and teaching other people to provide safe environments as well. We offer the horses a life where there is trust and hope. We also participate in the removal of horses from neglectful and/or abusive situations. Through the efforts of Safe Haven Horse Rescue and Sanctuary, we care for the equine, by restoring health and well being and if possible placing them in loving, caring homes.

The facility is maintained through the donations of supporters, throughout the United States and Canada, and we encourage you to visit our Website and consider a donation or the "adoption" of one of happy tenents

History & Background

Linda Richards started Safe Haven in January of 1995. Linda would go to auctions and see mistreated and neglected horses. This broke her heart because she knew they deserved a better life including someone who would love them and care for them. That was the vision that brought Safe Haven to reality. She has been rescuing horses for since 1995 now and takes them in as space allows.
At the age of sixteen, Linda had a horse of her own. She became a veterinary technician and thought that she would always be able to live in harmony with "Sunny". As time went on she had to make the difficult decision to give up her horse. Luckily, she found someone who would not only love Sunny just as much as she did but also had enough time to spend with him. It was through that experience that Linda discovered there were other people going through the same predicament and she wanted to help them as her friend had helped her. This was the first hint that Linda had that she would be involved in horse rescue. Now, along with her volunteers, she finds time to feed and care for 20-25 horses.

This Blog will continue to be a Journal of progress in growing the Facility and give notice of New Guest and the progress of existing horse in our care and custody.

Patches welcoming a new Friend, Diamond
