Delta Dawn's......Final....Journey........

It is with a very heavy heart, that Safe Haven Horse Rescue, has had to make the saddest decision for our Beloved Delta Dawn...........
Delta Dawn will be humanely euthanized today,Sunday, Dec.27,2009, at home at Safe Haven. She has fought the Good Fight, with Grace & Heart. Her back leg is giving out on her & we can NOT let her suffer! Yesterday, she was having to lean her 'bad' side against the fence in her shelter for support...so that was her way of telling Linda R. that she was ready to continue on to another kind of Journey....... one of...... Peace & Joy !
Safe Haven Horse Rescue, would like to Thank You All for the Love & Support you all have sent for this very Special Mare. She was only with us for a short 31/2 months.....but in that time she has helped us; smile thru the anger, laugh thru the tears, & to know what real Courage is, & what it's like to have; the Heart of a Stallion!

Delta Dawn will always have a Special Place in our Hearts!

Saturday @ Safe Haven Horse Rescue!

It was a very busy day at Safe Haven Horses Rescue, yesterday....lot's of horses were out in the arena for some much needed exercise!!! Addy had her turn to; run, buck, roll, & just stretch out those legs!!! After venting off some of that energy, Safe Haven Volunteer & Sponsor, Heather, took her for a ride! Addy is a gaited Morgan Mare, saved out of the kill pen at a Washington state feedlot! She is available for sponsorship! For the small amount of $65.00 a month you can sponsor her! The sponsorship $'s are the 'bread & butter' monies for Safe Haven, it all goes to help feed them & keep them well! Hope you too can be a Sponsor like Heather! Bailey was out for a romp in the arena too! She is also a kill pen rescue from a feedlot in Nevada! She has since been adopted by Volunteer, & Sponsor, Tracey!!! Bailey is a 7 year old Appaloosa Mare, & she loves her Mom, Tracey, they are 'buds'! Tracey is Safe Haven's Appy Aficionado!!! She also takes care of Ginger, who's a pregnant kill pen rescue Appy! Tracey is very good w/ those APPY'S! Actually she is a great asset to Safe Haven!
Little 6 month old, flashy, Lizzie Anne, was let out to run too! Her pen neighbor Diamond, is trying to keep up w/ this youngster, but he's having a heck of a time doin' it! See him 'bringing up' the rear back there? I named this picture " Lizzie Anne! STAGE RIGHT! TURN!!!!!" as she is no match for the barreling down the arena ......... Bailey!

Safe Haven Horse Rescue is the most wonderful place to be!!!! We offer riding lessons to children & adults, it's a good place to see just how serious your child is about owning a horse,as the lessons start from the ground up &&&& includes all the care for the horse &&& the scoopin' of the poop!!! One Mom found out in a quick 1/2 hour that her daughter's were not very serious about having a horse, if it involved keeping the pen clean!!!!! Safe Haven saved her from a 'problem'!
Hope to see you all soon! Bye for now,
Linda C.

Delta Dawn..what's that 902lbs...you've put on!!!!!!

December 18, 2009, was such a nice day, that Delta Dawn had her blanket off....So we weight taped her..........& the results were........... 902 lbs!!!!!......... Whooo Hooo! That is a weight gain of 67lbs since Nov! Delta Dawn is such a character! She is always alert & checking out what's going on!!The expressions she gets on her 'most beauteous face' is amazing!!!! She's looking at Linda & saying....." I know everyone is interested in my progress BUT cheeze! a girl's weight is kinda PRIVATE ya know!"
So she let us do the weight tape & stood very still. The results were 902 lbs! A total weight gain of 202lbs! since she was brought to Safe Haven Horse Rescue in Sept of '09!!! AWESOME!

Dang! here's the same pic!!! "/................like the scarecrow says,,,"if I only had a brain"!!!!

Delta Dawn's neck is now starting to fill in & her face has gained some weight too! The best part is; she is not as 'pointy' on the hips & butt as she was when we first met her!!!!!!

Delta Dawn is having a problem w/ her left back leg, Linda R. went Cottonwood Vet Clinic on Friday & talked w/ Dr. Gray about the leg. He believes that there is a good possibility that the X-rays will show on old untreated injury...that just might be 'fixable' w/ surgery! Dr. Gray has just returned from a conference, all about fetlocks!!!! Talk about timing!!!!!!
These pics are not the best......it was late afternoon....so the light wasn't the best....but you can kinda see the problem.
Here's the right side of Delta Dawn's body! She is losing that dreaded 'tea cup' syndrome! YEAH!!! Good shot of her 'not so bony' hip bone too.
BUTT SHOT!!!!! Can you see that the dip at the top is not so large now?
I like this pic the best of her body shot, as it shows how nicely she is coming along!
So after all the weight taping and the checking out of her leg........it was time for some fun w/ Linda & Drifter, our girl decided!!!! So Linda got 'sandwiched' in between horse heads as they said 'hello' to each other!!! As you can see Drifter has a had a nice roll in the MUD!!!

After a bit of 'sharing' nose breath w/ Delta Dawn........Drifter turned to me as if to say....Here's looking at you kid!!!! Or,,,all righty then...enough with the camera!!!!

Look at those awesome noses! Aren't they just the cutest!!!!! Safe Haven Horse Rescue is such a wonderful place! The work is hard & is never ending!, but the REWARDS are LARGE! Wish....... everyone could come out to Safe Haven & enjoy the horses! Today is Saturday & always a big day at Safe Haven Horse Rescue...so load up the kids, & the grandparents, & come on out & brush a horse!!!
Hope to see you soon!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

A Safe Haven Horse Rescue's SNOWMAN!!!!!

It was soooooooooo.....cold at Safe Haven Horse Rescue last week, there was water faucets freezing & bursting all over the ranch!!!!!! The arena got flooded, a couple of times!! It was a night mare for awhile!!!! All the poor horse's water buckets were frozen & we had to break the ice off of them!!! So if you look to the left of the "Snowman"! you can see the chunks of ice that came out of Buttercup's water!!! This actually is 'us' trying to keep this faucet from freezing...it had pipe insulation, & a towel, & a cone, all piled on top of it &&&& it still froze that night!!! This is how the barn cat Ki-Kitty dealt w/ the cold! she just rolled up in a ball in some loose hay!!!
another shot of Ki-Kitty, I just love her little ears..........She is quite the mouser & is muchly appreciated at the barn!!! She's a rescue too!!! She used to ride on the hood of the truck, we use to use, when we fed! She was our hood ornament!!! The truck has since been retired!!!

Besides all the horses that Linda R. has rescued over the years, she has helped to find homes for dogs, cats, birds, donkeys, & cows. If it's an animal in need Linda R. will knock herself out to help it!!!She needs to be Animal Planet's Hero of the Year!!!! Cuz she sure is one!
Hope you enjoyed seeing our 'snowman' :] & our curled up kitty!!! Safe Haven Horse Rescue is a wonderful place to bring yourself & family & friends to, that I hope to see you there SOON!!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Wade & his adopted boy 'Dozer'

Wade & Cindi volunteer at Safe Haven Horse Rescue & have been looking for a horse for Wade......a horse BIG enough for Wade!!!!! He's a 'John Wayne' size......... kinda guy & needed a horse that didn't look as if it was 'dwarfed' by Wade!!!! He tried Grady, a QH....Cindi...said "NO" &&&& then along came Easter!!!!! & a perfect match was found!!!!! The only thing not perfect was his name......... There were two possible choices for names; Tank or Dozer............& since Wade's National Guard unit was named Team Dozer, when they were helping to fight fires a couple of years back..........they decided on Dozer!!!! & believe me! He's big enough to handle the name quite comfortably!!!!! & also he is NOT Dwarfed by Wade! Dozer is quite the Tank! LOL! Will post pic of Wade riding Dozer real soon!!!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Zipper!!! You're helping me?

Meet.....Zipper!!! He is a T/B, Percheron cross & is a product of the awful PMU industry "/ Zip was saved along w/ Splash by Safe Haven's good buddy Maggie, she rescued them when they were just babes. Anyhoo.. I was in Zip's pen replacing some insulators, & focusing on my task, when Zip comes over, picks up the bag of ins. & just happens to get the closed end & says..."here let me help you...you need more right?" He took that bag & started to shake them out!! There was insulators flying ever where! LOL! Debbie pointed out what he was doing! So I then focused on Zipper, just as he had emptied the whole bag!! I went running over to him as I was afraid he'd try & eat the bag too!!! He is just the most helpful boy! The pics are of Zip & his sponsor Mom, Cori. She is the gal w/ all the words that writes the wonderful newsletters for Safe Haven Horse Rescue!
I think Zipper is pouting here, as I took his new toy away!!! He did not want to co-operate w/ having his picture taken!!! & took Cori to the other side of his pen!!! Ya know, I would just love for Lynne B. to write just exactly Zipper was saying & doing w/ that bag of 'goodies'!! It would be soooo..much better & cuter & funnier, &...........I wonder if she will?
Have to go to work, "/
Hope you all have a great day!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Lovey, Lovey, Lovey!!!

Lovey, is a twenty something, T/B mare that came to Safe Haven Horse Rescue a few years ago &&& she was *400lbs* under weight!!!!! She was in very bad shape & she needed food & a bath, both of what she got in the first hours of being at Safe Haven! She has turned out to be a very Special horse, & has been adopted by Holly. They have a never ending bond! Lovey says; "Hellooooo, got treats?" After we put new tarps over two shelters, yesterday we had a good size piece left over & Bonnie wanted to see if it would fit over Lovey's shelter, as she DOES NOT care for her neighbor Willow!!! This is Lovey's Don't Mess w/ Me Face!!!! (that Willow pretty much ignores)
Lovey decided that she would be a 'ham' for me & my phone/camera!! She just cracked us up!!! First she went this way &&&& then.............

she went the other way....like have you got my best side yet? Which one do you think it is!!! Is higher better?

Or...should I get closer? How's this angle??? I have my lips scrinched up...is that cute???

Lovey I'm sure was being so cute cuz she thought my phone was a new way to deliver 'treats' & boy was she working it!!! Yes, she did get some treats too!!! Do you see all the fun you could have around the horses at Safe Haven Horse Rescue. Not everybody that comes out to the ranch, rides, some come out just to be near these amazingly wonderful creatures. YOU also can help at Safe Haven too!The price of 'admission' is............ apples & carrots! (there is no admission fee) but apples & carrots are always welcomed!!! It's a nice FREE way to spend time w/ you're children & help to take care of a horse!! Hope to see you SOON!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

Saturdays are busy, busy, busy!!!!

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, was a BUSY one at Safe Haven Horse Rescue!!! Rumtata (T/B) was fussing w/ Bailey (Appy) over the fence of their pens &&&& Rummy caught her foot in the fence"/ & pulled off her new shoe!!!! so Bailey's Mom, Tracey, & Rummy's Sponsor, Kathy, went to work to replace the old non-climb fencing & replaced it with a 'pig panel'. They worked very hard at replacing that section of fence so our Rummy would be safe!!! Girl Power!
I missed a couple of 'chores' that were done; there was a new panel pen put up, a pony brought over to the ranch, the tractor was out & being used, & a few other things I didn't get pics of! Sorry!

This is Lovey's old pen, that we have moved, & now there's a t-post to be pulled out, Ryan did it!!! & Cori & Bonnie are figuring out the easiest way to move the mats to her new bigger pen!!!Looks like there is a wheelbarrow going by in the background with some 'golden' apples in it!!!!! Good Job!
Ryan & Cindi are checking out the mat situation too!! That's the t-post puller Ryan has in his hands!!

Well, Dang! this pic was actually suppose to be before the mat pics "/ Anyhoo! Everybody picked up the shelter & tarp that was in Lovey's old pen, & moved it to the new one! Brought in a railroad tie to help hold down the tarp!! Oh, & there is Rick's tractor in the background of this one!!!

We decided to take the most of the old tarp off of the shelter, because it really needs to be replaced, so we only left enough for a little shade & cover from the rain. Nice Duct tape job on the tarp there Ryan! Duct tape is a VERY important tool at Safe Haven Horse Rescue!!! We use a lot of it! Linda R. has gone to every pen w/ duct tape & put on each pen what that horse gets for feed. Really is helpful too! We have lot's & lot's of horses ....so it's a mental exercise to remember all that they get, cuz each one is fed according to their own personal needs!!! Sixty horses that's a lot of 'needs' to remember!!!
Before we could work on the pen we had to put Stormy in another pen, she is still shy of people :( & it takes awhile to get her to let you catch her! Bonnie is going very slow with her, & Ryan's the Blocker!
Bonnie succeeds in putting the lead rope on Stormy ( knew she would) & will lead her to another pen w/ less activity, Stormy gets very nervous, & we think she will always be that way, she just doesn't get that we want to be her friend! that's so sad. Makes a person wonder how she was treated in the past! Poor Baby Girl!

We also had some 'new parents' come to take their new Mini's home! They have SEVEN children, & have adopted Notion & Dandy for their children to take care of & love!!! Notion & Dandy love children & should be very happy. Will post pics of them & theirs, when they send them. Dandy is the little one, & Notion is the one w/ the 'sheepdog' hair-do!

Safe Haven's board member, Steve Hood, came over to transport the mini's to their new home! Steve moves alot of horse for Safe Haven & is available to move yours too! Call Safe Haven & we will get you in touch w/ Steve!
While us adults, were working, there was happy horses in the arena, & few girls riding in the arena too. I just love this picture of Bonnie's Flower!!! She is being silly w/ her lips!!! Isn't that a kick!!!

Delta Dawn, found a nice sunny spot in her pen & decided it was the time for a little nap! Awhhh...

While Delta Dawn was snoozin'...... Lydia was exercising Gypsy in the arena.....Gypsy is an Arabian mare & is up for adoption too. Lyd, likes her alot & she is a nice ride!
Samantha was also exercising her Arabian mare that was adopted for her last Christmas!!! Sam & Gracie make a very good pair! Way to go SAM!
When all the riding was over, we put more horses out for a romp!!! Good Ole' Drifter, had a nice 'roll & romp' ! He is a very nice horse & is a permanent resident at Safe Haven! Ryan! are you exercising Splash or is she exercising you? LOL! (look under D's neck & you'll catch a little bit of Splash)

As they say on.......... Facebook............Flower & Splash are now friends!!!!!!

Hi Willow! Willow is a kill pen rescue!!!!!!! Saved by the most awesome horse friend , Shirley Puga & her helpers. Willow is being assessed right now, but more than likely she will be available for adoption too, we'll let ya know in a few weeks! I like her alot! Good Ground Manners!

After the pen was secured, & the shelter moved, & the tarp 'adjusted' & the mats moved, it was time for Stormy to come back to her pen! This time Kathy, did the honors of moving Stormy. Kathy has spent alot of time w/ Stormy over the last year too.
After her fun ride on Gypsy, Lydia cleaned her pen &&&&& then she cleaned Lizzie Anne's pen !!!
Way to go Lydia!!!! Little Lizzie Anne is so cute! She's over there helping Lyd tie her boot!
Lizzie Anne wanted to be in on all the poop scoopin' action! I think she said she'd help if she had a thumb! Gosh! That is gonna be one Beau-Ti-ful horse! Just look at her!!!

Lizzie Anne says let me see & smell that Lydia!!!!
Nice big scoop, there Lyd! Wheelbarrow pretty full too! What Lyd doesn't know yet....it has a flat tire "/ She really got a 'workout' pushing that to the manure pile!!!!
Lydia ended her 'scooping' session with a bit of "HUGGIN' ON A HORSE" Lizzie Anne enjoyed the love,,LOOK.....she's smiling!!!!!!
Safe Haven Horse Rescue is such a wonderful place! The horses need our help, But, by Golly, us humans that volunteer out there, come away with much more than we give.....we achieve; Peace, Self-esteem, a Sense of Belonging to something so Large & Precious, that we find it hard to express!!! Guess you'll have to come out to experience it for yourselves!!!!! Ya'll will be welcome anytime!
Bye for now,
Linda C.
