Cannonball! Oh NO You Don't!!!!!

Lisa's son, Brandon, is having a ride on good ole Cannonball! He is definitely one of the kid's favorites! Brandon is wearing his helmet as ALL riders under the age of 18 are required to. Way to go Brandon!!! I think, Cannonball has sumptin' up his sleeve!!!!
& I was RIGHT!!! He thought he could 'sneak' past Lisa to get into the goodies in the BARN!!! GOOD BLOCK! Lisa! Cannonball goes "What? What! You're telling me I can't do WHAT?"

So Cannonball, Looks Lovingly at the hay & says "Oh Dear, I was this close!!!"
Cannonball's next approach to his situation was to NOT be interested in the hay at all! in hopes that Lisa C. would GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!! But I'm happy to report that Lisa, stayed steady at her blocking, & Cannonball was Saved from Himself!!!!!

Cannonball, is in his late 20's, has Cushings, is a musher, & is a permanent resident at Safe Haven Horse Rescue!!!! He's a cutie, can be a little stubborn, but nothing too bad!!!

Hope to see YOU, & your Children out to SPONSOR Cannonball, so they can enjoy this wonderful little character too!!!!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

The Cost of Intranasal Vaccine for EQUINE Flu Outbreak!

In the midst of an Equine Flu Outbreak, here in Cottonwood, Ca. Shasta & Tehama counties, the cost of the Intranasal Vaccine, became a HUGE ISSUE, for Linda Richards, founder of, Safe Haven Horse Rescue! Of course, this all happened over the weekend when the Vet's office was CLOSED! So! first thing Monday morning Linda R. & Lisa C. were at Cottonwood Vet Clinic office to press Dr. Grey about the actual cost!

We paid $19.00 per vaccine, that price is for buying more than 10 at a time! $22.00 if you purchased less than 10, as of 1/23/10. It was pointed out to Safe Haven that our Very own Vet's website had the same nasal vaccine for $13.99! Linda R. was very upset, as we have 60 horses to vaccinate & wanted to know why, we being charge so much by our Vet! Dr. Grey & the office manager, explained that they did not think to tell us about the web site! They also explained that w/ the overhead at the clinic they could not offer the vaccine any cheaper!
Linda R. went home & got on the computer, & checked out the nasal vaccine on the vet's site & found out that Yes! they are offered at $13.99 per dose WITH a shipping & handling charge of $15.00 per every 10. Safe Haven Does Not have the Funds, to order all that we would need!
Our volunteer, Cori M. has a call into the manufacturer of the nasal vaccine, Intervet! The only problem we have is TIME! Since the outbreak is so rampant here in Cottonwood we can not wait for the wheels of a big corp. to turn! AS of last Friday, there was 70 horses sick & 3 have died!!! It's an airborne virus & TIME is of the essence!!!
We are working diligently to raise the funds needed to keep our Horses Safe from this virus! If you have sent a donation, THANK YOU! if you could send something PLEASE do. The PayPal button is on the side of this blog page. No amount is too small...We Know Times are Tough......Believe Me.......We Know!!!
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
Linda C.

Leo at the Vet / Equine Flu Outbreak / Nasal Vac.

Saturday, 1/23/2010 started out w/ Leo not eating his breakfast!!!!( Leo is a voracious eater, so something is Very wrong!).........SO! Off to Cottonwood Vet Clinic we go!!!! Dr. Hooten was the vet on Sat duty, & here he is listening for Sand! & he did not find any! Blood was drawn for testing. Leo was put into the stocks.......& after some other 'gathering' of stuff to test....... the blood work was done & Dr. Hooten is reading the results to Linda R. Everything came back GOOD, but Dr. Hooten could see that Leo was Not feeling well & was definitely uncomfortable & gave him some banamine.

There is an equine flu outbreak HERE, in Cottonwood! Dr. Gray reports that; he has treated dozens of horses sick w/ the flu in the past month, BUT, the number of horses being treated for the equine flu has picked in the past week alone! He also said; that we haven't seen anything like this in a long time. The outbreak of equine flu in the Cottonwood & Red Bluff area has sickened 70 horse & has killed 3! (in Cottonwood) The nasal vaccine protects the horse within 24 hours so, that is the best way to get your horse protected the fastest! The nasal vac. is $22.00 per unit w/ a discount to $19.00 for a purchase of 10 or more! Safe Haven purchased 11 of the vaccines & w/ Adopted Owners purchasing for their horses & some for Safe Haven horses, we were able to administer 19 nasal vacs yesterday! We see Holly (Lovey's adoptive Mom) mixing the nasal vac.

Bonnie (Flower & Toni's adoptive Mom & Billy's Savior) also helped w/ the mixing & the giving!

We had a list of all Safe Haven horses & decided; the older ones, & lesson horses first, as they are the most exposed. Volunteer Heather is holding the vaccines, I'm recording the ones done, Holly & Bonnie are administrating, Lisa & Michael are collecting the used ones.

& Flower is exhibiting her opinion of the nasal vaccine!!! That was the consensus of most of the 19!!!
We are asking for donations to help Safe Haven vaccinate for this outbreak, we are checking for cheaper places to buy them locally, we are looking on the Internet, we are doing whatever it takes to protect Safe Haven Horses!!! If you would like to help; you can use the Pay Pal button on the front page of this blog, no amount too small! Thank You for helping Safe Haven Horse Rescue in this very urgent matter, as we are in the heart of the outbreak!
Bye for now,
Linda C.

RAIN & WIND.........OH MY!

Wow! This is what I saw as I went to feed the horses at Safe Haven Horse Rescue on Wed. 1/20/2010! As you pull into the driveway, there is a bridge to go over...........& this is the Creek to the left side of the bridge!!! This is the creek to the Right side of the bridge! The water all converges together under the bridge.
Now we're looking at that nice 'green pasture' you've all seen Charley in!! Not so dry anymore!

Oh Dang! The poor bulletin board is thrashed once again! At least it didn't end up in the horse pen like last year!!! That thing is extremely heavy too!!! I know, cuz Me & Linda got it OUT of the horse pen last year!

Well, this WAS, Ginger & Rumtata's shelter!!! Linda R. was cutting the blowing tarp off of this shelter at MIDNIGHT, in the rain, a couple of nights back!!!! See that shelter back there? That's where we're going next!

This is from Splashes pen, & it the back side of the pretty 'green pasture'! What a mess!
The wind 'took care' of the tarp over Splash & Bailey's shelter, so we are cutting it off!! Linda R. said guess I shouldn't smile as I took this pic, but I said yes you should I'm taking your picture!!!
Of Course the wind can move Rail Road Ties off of the tarps & it can blow the Bulletin board over BUT could it blow the tarp off the peak of the shelter being held on by the tip of a screw? OH NO!!! That would have been tooo easy!!!! So ever the adventurer, Linda R. got up on Splash's feed box to get the tarp off!!! & she did!
We're still in Splash's pen & I thought you'd like to see my feet, & what we're standing in!!!!! How do you spell....eewwwe............. or how bout just plain old YUK! & I want you to know that these pants & muck boots, have been WASHED!!!! eeewwww! I thought this was bad But never fear we found Worse!!! And here it is! Billie's pen! The muck was sooooo deep in this pen, that I didn't dare take out my phone for pics, cuz it was a feat in itself just to walk!!!! Double eewww!!! The wind not only thrashed the tarp, the poles of the shelter are wrecked too"/ We cut this tarp off & dragged it out of Billie's pen, & by this time we are done feeding everybody & we're pretty done in ourselves!!!
OK, one more pic of the roaring creek, that is just behind Billie & Denny's pen!

After this pic, we went back to the barn to get the ZoomZoom, ready for the morning feeder, Chris, who has fed in the pouring rain all week!!! Lou & her hubby have been ever faithful & have come out in the rain to help her too! As you can see here, it is all about; For the Love of HORSES!
Bye for now,
Linda C.
